Cats Eye Tutorial
Follow my step by step guide to creating a realistic cats eye. If you have any question you can email me and I will be happy to help. Below is the list of materials I used obviously you could use other coloured pencils in a similar colour as those used.
Pablo coloured pencils:-
Lemon yellow
Pale yellow
Orangish yellow
Brownish orange
Umber
Olive yellow
Olive black
Olive brown
Yellow green
Cream
Moss green
Black
Sepia
White
Grass green
Lime green
Indigo blue
Light grey
Grey
Silver grey
Other tools:-
Derwent lightfast black
Slice or any other ceramic knife
An eraser
Pencil or trace down for the outline
Posca white pen 0.7mm
Zest it or any other solvent
Paint brush
finally a large coffee or tea!
Add a layer light layer of lemon yellow, followed by pale yellow and then green ochre around the edge.
Orangish yellow, brownish orange and umber around the outer parts of the eye using light pressure.
Olive yellow to the bottom left outside edges, add olive black and olive brown to the top edges, then build up under the pupil with olive brown.
Erase the marked out highlights, add yellow green around the pupil, add cream to the highlights.
Apply moss green around the right of the pupil, line the eye with black and the top shadowed area, add white to highlighted areas.
Add grass green around the pupil, and lime green in lines moving away from the pupil as though they were numbers on a clock, blend everything with zest it.
Add the small line details with sepia, darken the top area with black and add some of the highlights at the bottom in white
Continue to build up the mid tones with orangish yellow, the darker with olive brown and the lighter tones with pale yellow.
Now build up around the eye with umber and then black, add a light pressured layer of indigo blue to the pupil.
Darken the pupil with black, place in the highlights with light grey and then grey.
Continue to build up the outside of the cats eye, this isn't our main focus but it allows us to use a great tool later on, so add sepia followed by black, add some of the lighter details around the outside with white.
Add the details to the corner of the outer eye first with silvergrey followed by grey. Darken the top shadows near the eyelid with olive black.
Continue to darken the top area with umber and then black. Using the ceramic slice tool scrape away some additional lighter areas in the eye, don't panic you can't break the drafting film, but have the knife at an angle you're scraping not cutting.
Add white over where you just sliced the iris. Begin to add in some fur texture, this is great practice for using the slice toold for those fine detailed fur marks. I used a Posca uni pen to add the highlights for this tutorial but I am not sure how archival it is I normally use Brush and pencils touch up mixture mixed with the titanium white powder as it's archival and made for coloured pencils.
Add the white Posca pen to any areas of the pupil and around the pupil as you see fit, then darken all of your values again with black, I did then use the Derwent lightfast black as it's darker and creamier around the eye and under the fur we created.
