House Renovation - Denton, the beginning!

Updated: Apr 26

So I thought I would show the old girl some love on here too. Our house was originally built in 1884, however I believe in 1926 it was separated into two bedsits and this ladies and gentleman is what it remained as for many years, once again in the 90's numbers were placed on all rooms that could potentially become a bedroom and she was a HMO again. This is also the reason I was able to afford a house big enough for us all to live.

Just a few small snags there wasn't any electric, or gas and the survey was as long as war and peace, luckily however the putrid smell from the two fridge freezers left in the cellar deterred most buyers and I managed to get her for a steal. Good job really the woodlouse graveyard that was to become our home had a few minor issues:-

  • Three original wooden single paned windows (freezing).

  • Three showers, one had the pipes cut through, the other two leaked.

  • no connected overflow to the bath (still can't have a full bath or a shower).

  • Artex ceilings (luckily after testing no asbestos).

  • Woodworm

  • Wood rot

  • The front door wouldn't open.

  • The floor in the kitchen wasn't stuck down (nice trip hazard).

  • The oven, fridge, and washing machine didn't work (We left the oven at the old house).

  • A dormer that needs knocking down and rebuilding.

  • Mould

  • No gas

  • No electricity

  • Plasterboard over the top of ceilings pulling the lathe and plaster down.

  • A lovely fire panel, smoke alarms and emergency lighting.

  • One out of three toilets working.

  • A conservatory that wasn't sealed from the elements.

  • Dead and alive rats.

  • Probably many more things I have forgotten along the way!

So we moved into our new abode with torches and plenty of blankets, my Dad (who luckily is an engineer and without him I simply couldn't have done what we have manged so far) lives next door, he posted an extension lead through the window for the fridge freezer and that was that.

I spent the next two days cleaning everything, disassembling the furniture that was left and after 2 days we had gas and electricity, everyone had a bedroom and the adventure began. House renovation here we come!

Until next time remember you can do anything you put your mind to.
